So I recently finish watching Strange Empire, a dark western series set in 1869 about a group of women who fight to survive the Alberta-Montana border and raise their families. I gave it a 4/5 on Netflix, it was interesting seeing the cast of characters trying to hold their own after the men in their town are gruesomely murdered. But I feeling silly thinking that this series was going to be about anything else. You can watch the trailer here.
You see, the town where the series takes place is called Janestown and with a the promotion art for the series I thought the story was going to a about a man who ends up in a western town run by women. Why this confusion? The way Netflix presented the series.
Even the Netflix cover art doesn't show the main cast of protagonist women trying to fight to survive, but the antagonist, John Slotter, a violent mine owner who, in the series, looked like he owned the town.
Even the title 'Strange Empire', with it's upside down 'A' reminisce an upside down world, and the man on the picture recalls a stranger in a strange land. So yeah, all of these visual cues tell a story, which for someone like me was a dark western where a stranger arrives to this strange upside down empire, called Janestown, and comes face to face with a matriarchal society, à la Wicker Man. But this series does not reflex the thumbnail. It feels a bit misleading to me.
So is Strange Empire good? It's an interesting historical series about the hard life of women in the 19th century far west. So I give it the score of 4/5 stars. So what about you, did you see the series? If so what did you guys think? What did you expect when watching this series?
In Season 2 of the CW series The Flash we get to see glimpses of Earth Two and how this parallel universe diverges from Arrowverse Earth One. One of these glimpses comes from the episode Enter Zoom, the sixth episode of the second season of The Flash.
The revelation of Robert Queen's identity on live television.
Those who have basic knowledge of DC Comics, maybe notice that this version of Robert Queen is reminiscent of Thomas Wayne from Flashpoint, a DC comics arc in which Thomas became Batman in an alternate timeline, rather than his son Bruce. The other interesting part of that alternate timeline the identity of the Joker, Martha Kane, the wife of Thomas Wayne and the mother of Bruce Wayne.
Martha Kane as seen in the movie Flashpoint Paradox.
If the death of Flashpoint Bruce Wayne made his mother go mad. What would stop Earth-2 Moira Queen of putting on a mask and give her own brand of justice?
Picture of Isabel Rochev as Ravager.
What if after the Queen's Gambit sank. Moira Queen isolated herself. Living in her regrets, believing both her son and husband were killed during the heavy storm in 2007. What if she spent the next 5 years to train and become Earth-2 Deathstroke, a killer obsessed on taking down the one responsible for sabotaging the Gambit, the covert organization known as Tempest and its leader, Malcolm Merlyn. So is Earth-2 Moira Queen running around Starling City as Deathstroke, could she be some other version of a Green Arrow nemesis, or is she just a rich 1%'s wife keeping secrets from everybody to protect them? Let me know what you guys think in the comment section down below.
I think I should use this website more, have dev blog posts about my comic book universe, but like Max "Silver Hammer" Caulfield from Life is Strange, I am underestimating my work, my creations, my stories, my characters, is the world going to like them? Will they accept them? How about me? I kinda feel like I'm projecting my personal fears about my everyday life on to this situation, wanting to make something, be accepted and liked by others. Solution?
This is no easy task, I need to completely rewire the way I think about this situation, but I'm getting there day after day, fighting dyslexia, my previous lack of self confidence since the events of 09, but that is a story for another day. The point to this blog post is the say, I am not perfect, I wish I had the financial to go on a road trip to see my friends and Montreal or Sherbrooke, but 6 hours drives, without the gas money nor the car isn't cutting it. Working on this comic book would be a dream come true, and I am working on this project on the side as I working with a very small team as a character artist on a French Otome game called Love Eden. I am thinking of something I could do with this site, but I just need to see where this might go. I might need your help, building this community, this world. Maybe you want to join me on this journey, and if you do this might be where it will start.
Your friend for Another World,
So my winter vacations started the December 19th and during these two weeks I went through all the stuff and notes I had about the Tronnyverse and what was important in my note when building the world. After rereading the sweet tutorials on Elfwood.com about world building my data was complete. Why should I try to build this complicated alternate Earth with every little detail? What I did, focus on what was really important, the key elements that exist within 'Tronny-Earth' and make the story work around it. I even printed maps that I worked with to organised the layout of my fictional capital city of my fictional country. I hope that you guys had as must fun as I did during my holidays, let's take control of our lives for the new chapter of 2016.
Giving you all a big 'cyber-hug',
As an author I like to create. Create worlds, cities, stories, characters, etc. Sometimes I like doing this so much I can get lost inside of it. The research that I do, for tools, inspirations, it's all great fun.
You are writing a story, in this story, you may or may not have characters in this story. Logically I would think you have characters, but I don't know what kind of bad-ass writer you are to have to skills to write a story without any characters. So in this scenario, let's say you have characters. What is the family background of those characters. Parents? Grandparents? Siblings and/or cousins?
The website I would suggest to create your fictional family tree for you amazing cast of character is called www.familyecho.com. You can signup to the site, create you family tree or trees and the best thing I like of this site you can print you family tree (Or "print it" as a PDF like I do) to keep that family tree on your computer, or your wall, what ever your heart desires.
Bones: The other thing I use this amazing family tree creator is to organize the evolutionary tree of fantasy/science-fiction races for my world building. If you find any other great tricks or have any questions about world building. Leave a comment and I will try to answer your questions with pleasure. Anyway if I don't know the answer and I do some research and get back to you on that :)
The problem with setting your story in the "real world" is that our world has rules, universal laws that science itself has mathematically proving over many years.
The Tronnyverse isn't our world, it may look the same from outer space, but if you take the time to study it, you'll see just how different it really is. I posted a comic strip yesterday showcasing Tyler and bits of Tronnyverse Lore inside of in. One of the most important pieces of the Earth's alternate history, the United Empire of Canada, as seen below.
Ever since I went to college to study 3D animation, at the Cegep of Matane to be exact. I've found a strange pastime of working on the Lore of my universe. Inventing new languages, religions, alien life, etc. I've read an article on io9.com about what types of mistakes that authors make when creating alternate histories. You can go have a read if you want. Something clicked after reading it, the same it clicked when I talked to Yuki yesterday and it made me saw that maybe I'm missing something in my Lore.
I today I did some historical rewrites about the morphlords and the evolution of the morphloren races. It was interesting. I might post a bit more about the development of the mysterious realm I call Tronnyverse, some other day ;)
Have a fantastic week guys, I love you all.
Changing this sad mopey subject to the real reason I wanted to make this post. My friends and I shot a short video today. If all goes to plan, it will end up being a fun little skit. If it goes really well, I might become more and more motivation that I need with Tronnyverse Studio. Making movies, videos, drawing my comic which I have a few pages getting prepared, they're not posted since I gonna try to post on a scheduled an stick to it. The same thing I might do with my videos. I want to turns this passion into a working passion. Living off of this passion would be the greatest dream ever.
The story is coming along nicely, we have an mystical artifact, a protagonist seeking redemption and a mystical guardian creature standing between him and his freedom. I'll be introducing certain elements of the Tronnyverse, like other races living on our big blue beauty of a planet. The story is kinda of myth passed on from generation to generation, the story of a warrior seeking redemption and having his name turning into a legend.
After illustrating the children's book Who Am I? by Micheline Legault was so fun, that I started writing a one-shot epic in a medieval setting, with a warrior, myths, powerful relics and a guardian dragon. I'm not gonna give you to much information right now, but one thing is for sure. It's will be available as an eBook for the price of 0.99$. This will help Tronnyverse Studio to raise money to produce more great projects.
